Victor, Leadership in the Making!

I'd like to share a little story about a kid named Victor who I met 4 years ago.  Next month he is turning 18 and is now one of our Jr. Staff Leader.  He is in charge of our after school tutoring and art program.  What has transpired over the past 4 years of being present and mentoring has made a huge difference in Victor's life.  Three years ago he didn't know what he wanted to do or if he would even have a chance to finish school.   Many kids, if their lucky will go on to high school, but many don't have the opportunity and their educational desires are put to the side.  Why?  Parents are unable to meet the need for their children’s education because financially they are unable to afford it.  These are small towns where day labor jobs, farming, and fishing are the only jobs available and families can only afford the basic necessities.  Feeding the family is the top priority over education.  Most of the children make it to 6th grade and do not continue on.
Victor is supposed to be one of those kids.  Instead, he flourished in school and was able to attend high school in the neighboring town with our support. This is not the norm for kids in this small town of San Nicolas.  We are nurturing his skills and talent by growing him in leadership.  Because of his work in the after school tutoring program, Victor now sees himself as a teacher in the future,  which is very exciting!
We believe and know that Victor is going to change many lives. He is learning so much and has become an example to the community. Parents of the children who attend his classes are impressed by his maturity and care for their children. He started with a small group of 8 kids and in a year his class has tripled in size. He has recruited two Jr. Assistants to help him with his tutoring and art class.
Victor is leading the way for other kids in the community to not let challenges that they face in their lives stop them from achieving their goals in education and to have more doors open to them for a better future.
